Qantas (a great airline) has dropped the price of their February, March, and April 2018 flights from Montreal to Sydney, Australia down to $969 CAD roundtrip including taxes.
The flights have 1 stop each way.
There are also a few flights available in November 2017.

There are couple different ways you can find these:

2. Search for a flight from Montreal to Sydney, Australia (SYD)
Try dates in February, March, and April 2018

Important: Once your search completes, click on 'Flexible Dates' (near the middle of your screen).
Look for the dates that are $969. Click on these flights.
You may want to try a few different date combinations. Try to find the flights that have around a 2 hour layover each way. Not every date combination has the ideal 2 hour layovers each way.
The fastest flights may not be the flights at the very top of your search results, sometimes you need to check out the first 3 or 4 flights.

You can also turn this into a 2-in-1 trip, and spend time in both Sydney, Australia *and* Los Angeles (or San Francisco) for $968 CAD roundtrip including taxes

3. Search for a flight like this:

4. As for the dates to use, for the first and last legs of the journey, try using the start and end dates from the regular roundtrip flight dates in the section above.
And then play around with the middle date, to give you more or less time in Australia vs Los Angeles.
For example, if the regular roundtrip dates are:

Update 6/16 - Qantas is now showing a few dates from Montreal to Brisbane, Australia for $978 CAD roundtrip including taxes
